
Remote valve safety systems for Australian Naval ships
In critical environments, the ability to quickly and safely isolate fuel systems can make a significant difference to both personnel safety and asset protection.
Following the tragic fire aboard HMAS Westralia in 1998, industry attention focused on the importance of providing operators with safer methods of isolating fuel systems during emergency situations. The incident highlighted the challenges associated with manually accessing valves located in hazardous or difficult-to-reach areas during an emergency.
The challenge
Many vessels, vehicles and industrial installations rely on manually operated valves that may be located in confined spaces, machinery compartments or areas that become unsafe during equipment failure or fire events.
In emergency situations, operators may be required to isolate fuel or fluid systems quickly, yet physical access to the valve can be difficult, time-consuming or potentially dangerous.
The challenge was to develop a simple, reliable and mechanically operated system that would allow critical valves to be operated remotely from a safer location.
The solution
Flexible Drive was engaged to design and supply a remote valve operating system that enabled fuel isolation valves to be controlled from a safe and accessible position.
